Camelbak All Clear

Camelbak All Clear

Most of us have a SteriPen floating around unused. Mine is anyways. I always think I'll bring it, but I can't ever remember how much charge it has and I don't always carry a Nalgene or other hard sided water bottle to do the treatment in. Now CamelBak has their own take on UV purification: the "All Clear" The "All Clear" is pretty bulky as a cap, but it does seem more convenient that you can simply press the button and not have to search your pack for the purifier. This would be a good device for day hikes and traveling. I have a hard time imagining it used as the sole water purifier on a longer trip with more than one person. The specs put the "All Clear" on equal footing with any of SteriPens out there, so it really comes down to preference. A SteriPen like the "Freedom" can fit in a shirt pocket or purse, also charges from USB and doesn't require the use of a specific water bottle. So that's still the best option for travelers. Camelbak conveniently has everything you need in one package, but it sacrifices the flexibility of being able to use it in a normal glass of water or oddly shaped containers. The bulb is protected inside the cap presumably making the whole device more shock resistant. I'd be less worried dropping the "All Clear"...my SteriPen just feels more fragile. One charge = 80 bottles...that's 16 gallons! One big button. Pretty simple. Big ol' cap. Strangers will ask about it and your answer will impress them Silicon sleeve prefilter attachment: just slide it on Honestly, the prefilter is simply not as good as SteriPen's clever little device. The mesh screen is not fine enough in my opinion, and the fact that the SteriPen version can be left on the bottle is a huge plus. I would characterize CamelBak's prefilter as an afterthought. A functional afterthought. I walked away with the feeling that "All Clear" is an okay product. I'm just not sure if I would use one on a regular basis.
