Thirty years ago, two Northern Californian mountaineers came up with a vision for using meticulous engineering, the finest raw materials, and unparalleled workmanship to design the highest quality sleeping bags. Today, Western Mountaineering has more than fulfilled that mission with dozens of ultralite sleeping bag models, as well as uncompromising down jackets, pants, and booties for the most extreme cold weather conditions. All Western Mountaineering ultralite products are manufactured in their factory in San Jose, California, which is still a hands-on operation.

Backcountry Gear offers Western Mountaineering sleeping bags and apparel with great pride. Western Mountaineering sleeping bags provide maximum protection against the elements. These sleeping bags are filled with 850+ goose down imported from Eastern Europe, which readies them for extremely low temperatures while remaining extremely lightweight. Without adding bulk, Western Mountaineering includes full down collars in many of their bags to seal in body heat.

Among the outstanding Western Mountaineering ultralite sleeping bags Backcountry Gear carries, the VersaLite stands out. It has wide shoulder girth, and promises to keep the shivers away with a 10 degree F rating weighing in at 2 lbs. For warmer climes, the mummy-style Alpinlite combines ExtremeLite fabric with 19 ounces of down fill to come in under two pounds and gain a +20 degree F rating.

All bags are filled with 850+ down, for ultra-warm and ultralite comfort. A great all around bag is the Western Ultalite 20 degree bag weighing just 1 lbs. 13 oz.  Or for extreme cold the Bison is rated to -40 and weighs under 5 pounds.

Western Mountaineering products don't stop at exceptional sleeping bags. The Hooded Flash Jacket is a great design promising performance, comfort, and weather resistance in an ultralite package. The Flight Vest comes in at about five ounces and still manages to work wonders as an insulating layer. It’s excellent for retaining heat at resting points. The Flight Pants protect against moisture and abrasion and feature a laminated outer shell on the knees and seat. To top it off, Western Mountaineering also makes excellent booties, comforters, and sleeping bag liners for base camp.
