Questions & Answers
Thanks for the question. The Alpine Aire Three Cheese Lasagna takes 2 cups of water to prepare, which is pretty average for backpacking meals. According to Wikipedia, MREs weigh from 510 to 740 grams (18 to 26 oz) depending on the menu. Backpacking meals weigh from 3 to 6 oz as they're packaged, and 2 cups of water weighs about 17 oz so the weight of either option is comparable. MREs don't require additional water for preparation, but you're still carrying the water weight. The benefit of keeping your food and water separate, especially if water is scarce where you're going, is you can forgo eating and just drink the water if you need to. Whereas I've yet to come up with a way to extract and drink the water from an MRE. Just my $0.02.
Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
