Big Agnes - Spike Lake 14 (Fall 2015)
Please note: Unlike most of Big Agnes' sleeping bags, the Spike Lake does not have a pad sleeve underneath.
What's in a Name?
Spike Lake sits at 10,433 feet on the east side of Colorado's Zirkel Mountains between Lost Ranger Peak and Mount Ethel. As high alpine lakes go this one sits high, blue, and full of trout. Neighboring lakes such as Rainbow, Roxy Ann, Slide, and Luna are better known and easier to access, which may be why Spike Lake is legendary for being so full of trout that backpackers have been known to spend days on its banks eating nothing but scores of fish caught out of its fresh, clean water.

Flow™ Construction: Insotect Flow™ is a flow-optimized insulation system that delivers uniform heat distribution and natural body contouring through its revolutionary baffle design. Flow Construction eliminates lateral and vertical down shifting by using vertical chambers with Flow Gates to regulate fill positioning and density. Strategically placed Flow Gates minimize vertical down shifting while vertical chambers minimize lateral shifting. With continuous vertical Flow chambers in place of traditional side seams, Flow bags eliminate potential cold spots which can occur with side seams. Vertical baffles now flow with your body for more rapid and uniform body heat distribution.
LEFT OR RIGHT ZIPPER? When you are in the bag, on your back, the right zip will be on your right side, left zip on your left side
- Awesome Sleeping Bag
- I recently bought this sleeping bag. I have tested it down to (verified with altimeter, barometer, thermometer and digital compass device) 32 degrees Fahrenheit. I stayed so amazingly warm and cozy. I still can't believe it weighs only 2 and half pounds and is strongly water repellent. I can't wait to use this as part of my lightweight gear for my Appalachian Trail thru-hike starting March 1 2016.
- Great Bag!
- This is a pretty awesome sleeping bag. 15 Degree, waterproof down, 2.5lb, packs small, UNDER $200!? All true. The only negative really is that the inside fabric is not the softest, maybe even the same as the outside, but I use a liner anyway, so not the biggest issue.
Questions & Answers
Thank you for your question.
While the Spike Lake 14 does not have a specific foot vent, the main side zipper extends nearly to the footbox, down to the last baffle on the bag. This zipper can be seen in the third, side-profile-style photo on the product page here: http://www.backcountrygear.com/spike-lake-14.html This is a two-way zipper, so it can be opened slightly from the bottom in order to vent out the footbox to some extent. Otherwise, I might recommend a semi-rectangular cut bag, which tend to have a zipper that extends around the bottom of the footbox, allowing maximum ventilation in that area.
I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.
