Quick Overview
Lightweight sleep system- Description
-
Therm-A-Rest combined the lightest, most packable gear they make to create a complete sleep system for lightweight backpackers and climbers. Their 2012 NeoAir XLite mattress provides the foundation for this system. The NeoAir mattress provides 2.5 inches of cushion and solid 3-season warmth, while weighing only 12 ounces. Insulation comes in the form of the 700-fill Alpine™ Down Blanket, which packs to the size of a water bottle and keeps you warm down to 35 degrees. An Ultra Light Pillow Case and a lightweight Snap Kit bring the system together without unnecessary insulation or fabric. The result is an integrated system that’s one of the lightest, most packable alternatives on the trail, and also one of the most comfortable.

Price Value Quality I got this setup (almost exactly anyway) at the beginning of 2010 for mostly summer use, but actually ended up on the Olympic coast in the snow one night! I’ve been a traditional mummy bag and foam pad guy for many years, but got sold on this new setup instead…so glad I made the switch, I’ve never slept this well before. It sounds silly, but it has actually opened up new places to me, because I am significantly better rested each day due to comfort, but also my base pack weight went from about 15 pounds to 10 pounds. The gear changed helped save a few pounds, but also the weight/space savings from this allowed me to go to a lighter pack too!
I was skeptical about the blanket setup (advocated by ultra-lightweight folks for a long time), but it is totally the way to go, especially for taller folks (I’m 6’2’’, 180).
