Fitting Your Gregory Pack In addition, visit the Backcountry Gear Limited Backpacks Shop, where we have collected the best packs in the industry, compared and contrasted next to each other. Gregory Mountain Products has been building backpacks since 1968, and has consistently built some of the highest quality backpacks in the industry. Comfort is a primary focus, and the value offered by Gregory for this level of quality is unmatched. We at Backcountry Gear all own a Gregory in one form or another, and we all swear by them. For all the lightweight enthusists out there, the new Makalu is an innovation you should discover. Wayne Gregory designed his first backpack as part of a Boy Scout merit badge project at age 15. His love of the outdoors was fueled on outings with the Boy Scouts and later Sierra Club backpacking and mountaineering trips. He became intrigued with the idea of making his own outdoor gear and a few years later began working with one of the earliest specialty outdoor companies in southern California, Adventure-16, assembling external frame backpacks. Soon he was dreaming of ways to make the packs better, learning to sew and design packs. In 1970, he began his first company, Sunbird, to produce advanced external frame backpacks. Wayne's early Sunbird packs extended the state of the external frame pack with adjustable swingarms to transfer load at the hips and adjustable shoulder harnesses to enhance comfort. After a few years, he dissolved Sunbird and began designing for a number of the notable companies in the newly emerging outdoor specialty industry, including: Alpenlite, Gerry Outdoors, and Snow Lion. During this period, he honed his design and manufacturing knowledge creating tents, sleeping bags and outerwear. Intrigued with new directions in soft packs and internal frame concepts he decided it was time to get back to his first love, designing backpacks. In 1977, he founded Gregory Mountain Products in San Diego, California. In the early days Wayne and his wife Suzsy operated their outdoor specialty shop with a small manufacturing operation in the back. The customers who came to the shop seeking the latest gear were a constant source of feedback for improvements and inspiration for new designs. From the earliest packs, Gregory has been noted for innovation, ergonomic design and an obsession with quality. The list of design firsts is long and notable including: first to develop a comprehensive system for pack fitting and sizing, first to utilize carbon fiber stays, first to utilize thermo-foam molding in a complete suspension system, etc. Wayne's understanding of the importance of proper fit and his personal commitment to providing the highest quality remain at the very core of what our products are all about. Today, Gregory packs are used all over the world, but the creative process is essentially the same. We use the packs ourselves, we send prototypes with new ideas on expeditions and testing trips, and we gather feedback from customers who use the gear. We get great detailed letters from customers, receive e.mail from all over the world and folks still drop by the factory to share their ideas and experiences. Today, Wayne does his design work on a sophisticated computer workstation, which provides tremendous flexibility for rapid prototyping. Many of the unique elements found in Gregory packs are a result of our desire and ability to come up with a better solution. The special aluminum molds that we use to produce our thermo-molded Flo-Form™ II waistbelts and harnesses were created by Wayne on the CAD system and then actually produced in our own Tool & Die room by our skilled machinists. Each and every component and design is thoroughly tested in the field and carefully refined before it finds its way to the market. Unlike many companies in the outdoor business today, we are a manufacturing company. We don't send a spec sheet to a factory somewhere in southeast Asia and then unload the container six months later. We build our packs in our main factory in Temecula, California and in our new factory in California's Imperial Valley. Our experienced production team includes many folks who have been with us for more than 10 years. We believe that this direct involvement in manufacturing the products provides invaluable feedback to the design process. By thoroughly understanding the engineering and production process we can build a better pack. We all take pride in producing a pack that will provide you with many years of enjoyment and superior performance.
