Price Value Quality With its bombproof construction and less-than-1-pound weight, the ID Silshelter sets the standard for a minimalist tarp-tent. There is no other quite like this.
With the many, many tie-downs, this tent is great in high winds. Pitch it high and there's plenty of headroom for one person, and plenty of ventilation around the edges. (Ventilation is very, very important in any sil-nylon tent, of course.) Pitch it low and there's room for two and more wind resistance.
OTOH, with all the guy-outs, pitching takes awhile. But with practice, setup becomes second-nature and relatively quick.
Being silnylon, the seams will not come sealed from the factory; there's currently no practical way to do this at the factory. Use sil-net on the seams (it came included with my Sil Shelter) for complete leak protection. I spent three straight days in mine during an unseasonable bout of high-alpine Colorado rain with not a single drop getting through.
For one person, maybe two, traveling light -- say an ultralight sprint on the Appalachian trail -- this is a fantastic choice. It's not cheap, but you do get what you pay for.(Posted on 12/23/11)
