I've always thought that to be a true lightweight junkie, you need to do things like cut off the handle of your toothbrush, bring no extra clothes and BELIEVE the forecast, or starve yourself for a few days. I was never too interested in any of these options. After carrying my fair share of heavy packs, however, I decided to look into cutting some pounds. As a Gear Tech, my first thought was to select ultra-lightweight equipment. As a result, we created the following list.

Gear under 11 lbs:
OK, here it is. This is the bare minimum for a summer / light 3 season trip. Food and clothing not included.

Apache Super MF sleeping bag 2 lb. 6 oz.
Integral Designs Unishelter 2 lb. 6 oz.
Madden Tolo backpack 3 lb. 15 oz.

SubTotal

8 lb. 11 oz.

Headlamp (Princeton Tec Solo) 4.5 oz.
First Aid Kit (Atwater Carey 0.5) 9 oz.
Knife (Leatherman Micra) 1.75 oz.
Lighter (7-11 brand) 2 oz.
Nalgene water bottle 10 oz.
Total 10 lb. 6oz.

How not to get killed going lightweight:
Lightweight means less stuff, and less stuff is lighter. But don't push it too hard. Don't skimp on the essentials: a first aid kit, food or emergency shelter. Seems that every year, someone gets caught on Mt. Hood (here in Oregon) for a night without any gear. The results are usually pretty grisly... Not to sound too much like your Mom, but be careful, dear.
