Questions on Mesh Bivy

    • Hi guys,
Im doing a backcountry slog fest in New Zealand soon, and need a four season bivvy with a bit more room to fit a pack and an Exped down mat. Can you guys get the Marmot Home Alone Bivvy with its solid walls?
    • Thanks for the question. Marmot is unfortunately sold out of that bivy for this season, so it will probably be at least a few months before we get them back into stock. Of the bivys we have available, the most comfortable and weatherproof in that price range are the Outdoor Research Highland Bivys and the Integral Designs Salathe Bivys. If you expect much rain I strongly encourage you to bring a small ultralight tarp (5' x 8' is a good size) to use in conjunction with the bivy.

For an extra few ounces and dollars, we also have several single person double wall tents that come in under three pounds. The amount of comfort and livability will be like night and day between the bivy and the tent. Thanks!

    • Hello!
I'm looking to buy my first bivy for mountaineering school. Temperatures are going to be below freezing, and we will be backpacking miles and miles to bivy on top of a mountain/rock face and more... in the northeast back country in January. Does this bivy come with an overcovering of some kind to protect me from wind, rain, snow, freezing temperatures?
      Thank you.
    • Thanks for the question. This bivy is really designed for fair weather campers in bug country. It could definitely be used in a wide variety of conditions, but Marmot does not offer a rain fly so you would have to rig something on your own. It's an 8' bivy, so an 8' x 10' could be pitched in an A-frame over it for pretty decent three season protection.

Personally I would go with a Mountaineering specific bivy or small tent. If price is the main limitation, we have a highly recommended bivy on sale right now called the "Backcountry Bivy" from Integral Designs (http://www.backcountrygear.com/integral-designs-backcountry-bivy-2010.html). It's a more utilitarian setup, but if the weather turns nasty you will be very grateful for the total protection.
