Questions on Vario Microfilter

- Hey guys, I've never bought a water filter in the past and I'm wondering what the major difference between a product like the Vario, as apposed to the MSR Sweetwater. To me it looks like pretty much the only difference is the price. Care to prove me wrong?
- Both filters are equally effective when it comes to filtering contaminated water. The Sweetwater is a simple, minimalist ceramic filter. It's biggest advantage is that the entire filter can be field cleaned repeatedly...a big plus if you're on an extended trip where replacement filters would be hard to come by. It is also less heavy and bulky.
The Vario is faster and has the option of switching between two modes. One mode has a really high rate of flow for basically clean, clear looking water. This faster mode uses only the glass fiber and active charcoal filter (both easily replaceable). In the second mode, you can twist the bottom to engage the replaceable ceramic disc "pre-filter". This is useful for dirty or turbid water. The second mode naturally doesn't pump as quickly, but it make the filter last longer before it needs replacement. Also, the ceramic disc can be cleaned in the field to restore flow in a clogged filter.
The Vario has more features of the two, but at the end of the day both filters will supply clean trustworthy water. - Do you find this question helpful? Yes No

Quick Overview
Most efficient filter out there- Description
-
The Vario combines individual efficiency with the simplest possible handling. The technology it uses consists of three filter levels: a high-performance glass fiber filter, a ceramic pre-filter that can be adjusted individually according to the cloudiness of the water, and active charcoal for eliminating odors. Anyone who needs up to two liters of drinking water per minute can use the glass fiber and active charcoal filter. If the water is extremely cloudy, the ceramic pre-filter can be fitted in a moment in order to extend the service life of the glass fiber filter. The Vario is compatible with most standard outdoor bottles and hydration bladders.

- Awesome Water Filter! Review by Kim

Quality Price Value There are a few features I love about this water filter but most importantly is how easy it is to use. It can screw directly onto a nalgene (which helps me prevent spilling) and it pumps both directions (pushing and pulling) to really speed up the process. It also comes in a nice little bag that is easy to pack and perfect for a day hike.
